About Katie's Ceramics

— Imperfection by Design

While many ceramicists aim for perfect symmetry, Katie’s work celebrates the opposite. Edges may flow, rims may bend slightly, and surfaces often carry the marks of the hands that shaped them. These small irregularities are intentional and give each piece its own unique character. The bowls and vessels are fully functional — perfect for holding objects, plants, keys, jewellery, or simply standing alone as sculptural pieces. They are designed to feel personal rather than manufactured. No two pieces are ever quite the same. Each piece begins as raw black or white clay. Rather than relying entirely on the wheel, Katie often builds forms by hand, allowing shapes to emerge organically. Edges can be softened, stretched, or left deliberately imperfect so the finished piece carries a sense of movement and rawness. Once shaped, the clay is left to dry slowly before being bisque fired in the kiln. After cooling, the pieces rest before the creative glazing process begins. Once glazed, the pot makes its final journey back to the kiln for its second firing, a process that takes around twelve hours. Katie enjoys taking creative risks with glazing. She is not afraid to experiment with vibrant colour combinations or to pair glazes with black and white clays in ways that are rarely seen. These evolving combinations of colour, glaze, and raw clay have become something of a signature within her work.

Sustainability

Katie produces work in small batches rather than mass quantities. This slower process allows each piece to be shaped with care and reduces unnecessary waste.
